Members of the National Book Critics Circle chose Ancestor Trouble as one of seven finalists, and the only nonfiction book, for the 2023 John Leonard Prize for the best first book in any genre. Newton reviewed Rachel Jamison Webster’s first book, Benjamin Banneker and Us: Eleven Generations of an American Family, for the Washington Post Book World.
